Coconut Options to Replace Dairy

My go to for dairy replacement is anything coconut based.  Mostly, I go with SoDelicous coconut milk products.  I’ve used them for years and years, and once I tried them I was hooked.

I used to be big on oat based milks before I found coconut milk.  You can get some great oat milk at Trader Joes, and another big popular brand is Oatly.  They make milk and ice cream as well.


Rice Options to Replace Dairy

In the past, I’ve actually made my own rice milk with my Vitamix.  You can also use this as a base to make your own ice cream.

There are also commercial options out there.

Nut Based Options to Replace Dairy

Unfortunately, I’m allergic to nuts, so I can’t tell you my personal experience here.  I do, however know that SoDelicous also makes almond milk and cashew milk products, so consider giving them a try!

  1. Combine all ingredients in the container for your blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add more milk if you like thinner milk shakes.
  3. Pour into 4 glasses and enjoy. Top with your favorite garnishes like vegan dairy free whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.


Your shamrock shake is best when you first make it. I don’t typically recommend storing leftovers but if you must, you can store them in the freezer. It will become more solid and you may need to thaw your classic shamrock shake made with plant-based milk (non-dairy milk) before you can easily drink it again. Keep in mind that the creamy texture may not be as smooth after you freeze and thaw it though. I wouldn’t store leftovers with garnishes on them though.

Tips and Variations

  • If you need to make this mint milkshake a dye free recipe, you can opt out of the green food dye. This recipe will be just fine if it isn’t green and it will still have a minty flavor that will help you forget that this shake is normally green in color. To add some pops of natural green color, you could add a handful or two of spinach to your blender with the rest of the ingredients.
  • To make your shake extra creamy, you can add some frozen banana chunks, fresh bananas, or a dash of coconut cream.
  • Bring a little extra texture and chocolate flavor to your shake my adding some dairy free chocolate chips for a mint chocolate chip shake!
